The original deadline of 31 July 2025 had already been extended to 15 September 2025 earlier this year. Taxpayers who miss today’s cut-off will still have the option to file a belated return by 31 December 2025, but with penalties and reduced benefits.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to further extend the due date for filing these ITRs for AY 2025-26 from 15th September, 2025 to 16th September, 2025. ITR Filing Deadline Extension 2025 Live: Latest News on Income Tax Return Due Date for AY 2025-26
If a taxpayer misses the 15 September 2025 deadline for filing their income tax return, they will need to submit a belated ITR by 31 December 2025. Belated filing attracts penalties—₹1,000 if taxable income is below ₹5 lakh, and ₹5,000 if it exceeds this threshold. In addition, interest is charged on any pending tax. The major drawbacks of belated filing include the inability to switch tax regimes, the loss of the option to carry forward losses, and missing out on certain deductions. While there is ongoing discussion about extending the ITR filing deadline for AY 2025-26, taxpayers should file on time unless the CBDT issues an official extension.

ITR Filing Last Date News LIVE Updates: Today is the late date for filing your returns
The I-T department in May announced that it is this year extending the due date to file ITR for Assessment Year 2025-26 (i.e. FY 2024-25) to September 15, 2025, from July 31, 2025.
Further, it has confirmed that there will be no more extension for taxpayers.
ITR due date LIVE updates: Will the ITR deadline be extended again?
“The key concern is whether the deadline will be extended again. After already granting one extension, the Income Tax Department has made it clear that September 15 is the final cut-off for non-audit taxpayers. Unless there’s a major system crash or large-scale glitches, another extension appears unlikely,” said Deepesh Chheda, Partner at Dhruva Advisors LLP.

Millions of salaried individuals and small taxpayers fall under the non-audit ITR category (ITR-1 to ITR-4). - Interest under Sections 234A/B/C may apply on unpaid tax amounts.
