Several major Indian Fertiliser Companies have signed an agreement with Russia’s Uralchem to establish a new urea production facility in Russia, marking one of the most significant India-Russia agribusiness partnerships in recent years.
According to Reuters, Indian Potash Limited (IPL) and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) will each take a 22.5% stake in the venture, with National Fertilisers Limited (NFL) holding 5%. Uralchem will maintain the controlling interest and lead the development of the plant. (Source: Reuters – Indian fertiliser firms sign deal with Uralchem to set up Russian plant, Dec. 4, 2025)
The proposed facility is expected to produce between 1.8 and 2 million tonnes of urea per year, leveraging Russia’s extensive natural gas reserves and established ammonia infrastructure. (Source: Indian Chemical News – Uralchem inks MoU with Indian fertilizer PSUs to form urea JV in Russia)
Officials said the project will strengthen India’s long-term fertiliser security, particularly as Russia has emerged as a major supplier to India following disruptions in global markets over the past several years. The venture is also seen as a hedge against global price volatility and export restrictions that have previously affected Indian farmers. (Source: Reuters)
Once operational, the plant is expected to become a cornerstone of India-Russia cooperation in agriculture and ensure a stable, predictable supply of urea for India’s domestic market.
